In the late 1960s, Dr. Clinton “Doc” McPherson and one of his colleagues began planting grapes to see if a vineyard could survive on the High Plains. As it turns out, the grapes not only survived, they thrived, and one of the first post-Prohibition wineries in Texas was created! Eventually, Doc and his partner went their separate ways, but Doc is still renowned as a father of the modern Texas wine industry.
In 2000, Doc’s son, Kim McPherson, founded the McPherson label in honor of his father and eight years later, opened the Downtown Lubbock urban winery, tasting room, and event center!
What started as a hobby has grown into a third-generation business. Over the past 40 years, Kim has become a wine expert and is continuing the family business with his children.
Even if you aren’t familiar with the McPherson tasting room, you may have driven past it without even knowing it! What is now the tasting room was once the Coca-Cola Bottling plant. The McPhersons knew it was going to be a lot of work to transform the plant, but they wanted to keep this piece of history alive and be a part of the city that’s accessible for both locals and tourists alike.
If you don’t know much about wine tasting, the McPhersons say you can still enjoy their tasting room. They encourage everyone (who is over 21) to come to their tasting room to enjoy some good company and great wine!
If you’re new to wine tasting, the McPhersons suggest trying a little bit of everything, asking a lot of questions, and keeping an open mind. Hone your preferences with each wine you taste. Learning to love and appreciate wine is all about exposure and trying new things.
