Downtown Lubbock is about to experience a transformation with the arrival of Broadway Market—a modern food hall promising delicious eats, live music, and vibrant spaces for everyone to enjoy, right across from the future Lubbock Downtown Park.
We sat down with Robert Taylor and Aric Lampert to discuss their exciting plans for the venue.
Bringing Big City Vibes
If you've ever visited cities like Detroit, Kansas City, or Nashville, you've probably noticed a theme about downtowns—vibrant food spaces that bring people together.
Food halls are more than just places to eat—they're hubs of community connection nestled in the heart of their cities. Imagine a single spot where you can grab barbecue, sushi, or a fresh-baked dessert, all while your kids enjoy their favorite slice of pizza.
It's the kind of place where life happens, where people gather, laugh, and savor a shared experience, and that's exactly what the vision for Broadway Market in Downtown Lubbock is all about.
For Robert Taylor—former CEO of United Supermarkets, TIF Board Chairman, and an investor in the Broadway Market—this project is more than just a building; it's personal.
Taylor said when he was a child, Downtown Lubbock was bustling. It was where you went for everything—commerce, entertainment, you name it. He wants people to feel that again.
Broadway Market is his answer to that dream. It will be a space where the community can connect, celebrate, and experience something truly unique.
A Vibrant Downtown Fuels Our City
Taylor and Lampert's vision goes beyond food. It brings a sense of community, opportunity, and progress right in the heart of Lubbock. For Taylor and his team, this is a long-term investment in the city.
"Development in the inner part of the city supports the rest of the city. So what's good for downtown will translate out economically," said Taylor.
He and Lampert explained how a thriving downtown acts as an economic engine, fueling growth and attracting people who want to live, work, and play there.
History & Progress
It's also where rich history merges with progress.
1318 Broadway, the food hall's address, is just that. The Broadway Market building was once a community health center. When complete, Taylor and Lampert said it will offer even more than food. "There's going to be a lot of seating out front overlooking Broadway," said Lampert. They plan to have plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces, including something extra special for the rooftop. Plus, there is a unique basement and subbasement space sparking all sorts of possibilities.
While they are still finalizing these plans, one thing is certain—Broadway Market will be a Downtown Lubbock hot spot.
It aims to create even more opportunities for up-and-coming entrepreneurs wanting to get started in the food industry.
"It's a shared economy. Instead of having all these different 3,000-square-foot restaurants, you have a 300-square-foot space. So, if you love to cook barbecue, you don't have to worry about marketing; you don't have to worry about cleaning. You cook barbecue," said Lampert.
The Broadway Market team shares the same dream for downtown that so many of us have held for years—that it becomes a dynamic, unique place where memories are made, businesses grow, and our whole city thrives.
Because Downtown Lubbock isn't just another part of the city. It's the heartbeat that keeps the entire community alive.
